How to Tell If Your Car Was in an Accident Before You Bought It
The moment after an accident, once the adrenaline settles and you have exchanged information with the other driver, comes a very practical question: can I actually drive this car home? Or to work tomorrow? The honest answer depends entirely on what kind of damage you are dealing with, and getting it wrong can be dangerous, expensive, or both. Here is how to think through it.
Auto Body & Collision Repair in Denver

Damage That Makes a Vehicle Unsafe to Drive
Some types of collision damage make a vehicle genuinely unsafe to operate regardless of how minor the incident felt. The most critical categories are structural damage, lighting failures, tire and wheel damage, and fluid leaks.
Structural damage to the frame or unibody changes how the vehicle handles and how it will respond in a subsequent collision. Even if the car drives normally on a straight road, a compromised frame may not protect you properly in another impact. If an airbag deployed during the collision, the vehicle should not be driven until the system has been professionally inspected and reset, because a vehicle with a deployed airbag and no functioning supplemental restraints is significantly less safe in any follow-up incident.
Non-functioning headlights, brake lights, or turn signals are both a safety issue and a traffic violation in Colorado. Damaged tires or bent wheels can cause sudden loss of control, particularly at highway speeds. Active fluid leaks involving engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, or transmission fluid can all lead to sudden mechanical failure, and brake fluid leaks in particular may result in a complete loss of braking ability.
Damage That Is Usually Safe to Drive With Temporarily
Not all collision damage is immediately dangerous. Cosmetic damage, including dents, scratches, and cracked bumper fascias that remain structurally attached, generally does not affect vehicle safety in the short term. A cracked tail light lens or a missing side mirror may create legal issues but not necessarily immediate safety risks, depending on the specifics.
The key word is temporarily. Driving with unrepaired damage for weeks or months creates its own set of problems. Exposed metal rusts quickly in Colorado’s climate, especially with road salt applied through the winter months. Small cracks in bumpers or panels can spread. And in some cases, damage that appears cosmetic may actually be affecting vehicle systems you cannot see, including ADAS sensors, structural supports, or cooling components.
The ADAS Problem Most Drivers Miss
Modern vehicles are loaded with cameras, radar sensors, and LiDAR units that power features like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring. Many of these sensors are mounted in or near bumpers, mirrors, and windshields, which are also the areas most commonly affected by collisions.
A vehicle that drives and looks fine after a minor front-end impact may have a forward collision radar unit that is slightly out of alignment and no longer functioning correctly. You would not know until the system failed to respond in a situation where you needed it.
When in Doubt, Have It Inspected
The safest approach after any collision, even one that seems minor, is to have the vehicle inspected by a professional before continuing to drive it regularly. At CDM Collision Center, we offer free damage assessments that cover both what is visible and what is not. We will give you an honest assessment of whether the vehicle is safe to drive, what requires immediate attention, and what can wait, allowing you to make an informed decision instead of a guess.
